Business Students Market Product to Compete with Amazon’s Kindle
“This is one of the best experiences I ever had,” said Business Education student Alex Gallardo. He was talking about the Adelphi Apprentice Business Conference which North Shore business students attended on December 1st. Working with Adelphi’s business faculty, students first learned how to develop a successful marketing plan. Then they were able to put their new knowledge to use in a marketing competition. This year’s assignment was to market an electronic reading device to compete with the Amazon Kindle.
North Shore students worked collaboratively in teams with students from over 15 other Long Island high schools. Teams brainstormed, strategized, created and then presented their marketing plan to a panel of judges made up of executives (minus Donald Trump). The team with best marketing plan, which included North Shore’s own Tristan Vitale, was awarded the coveted title of the “Adelphi Apprentice.”
The event was a huge success and students enjoyed working on a real business project and learning product marketing techniques. Meeting new people and sharing ideas were among the many highlights of the day. Morris Boratin agreed. “Everyone in my group was great. We all got along really well. By the end of the day we were like a family.” And Kelly Dolan summed up the students’ sentiments when she said, “I definitely want to do this again next year.”
Business teacher, Ms. Kornberg, explained that participation in the Adelphi Apprentice was available to students enrolled in her Introduction to Business class, one of the business electives offered at NS. “Introduction to Business meets on alternating days and is an excellent course for students interested in learning about a variety of business disciplines. Course topics include Business Ownership, Entrepreneurship, Marketing and E-Commerce. The North Shore Business Department will be doing our own version of the Apprentice in March, so stay tuned…Donald Trump look-a-likes wanted.”
